THE People BUSINESS ECONOMIC COUNCIL (NOTE: The opinions expressed in column are not necessarily these of this publication.) No one actually knows what 1959 will bring, despite all the forecasts, predictions and crystal-gazing that is taking place at this time. However, there are some definite plans any community can make at this time to assure that it will be a better place to live, and also make a living, at the end of the next 12 months. These plans don't have to come from any outside agency; they can be developed right at home, by home-folks, and carried to successful conclusion by local efort. In fact they won't work unless they are "home grown." We're speaking of the 1959 Mississippi Hometown Development program. It is a self-help program engaged in by 153 communities last year.

Each of these communities is better off at the beginning of this year, than they were in January 1958, because people worked together during the year to make improvements. Not all chalked up records of outstanding accomplishment, but all have profited- even by the mis takes made while working to improve their areas. This year, they are in a better position to reorganize, to push forward, and to acomplish the things that are desired by a cross-section of local citizens. In April, the 1958 winners will receive their cash awards. Eleven communities will get a total of $7,800, put up by 36 public-spirited firms and agencies.

While the other 142 communities will not receive cash, they were more than repaid for their efforts. In fact, the cash awards are dwarfed by the real value communities get from self-improvement work. A survey in November showed the dollar -value estimate of the program to be more than $65 million to the 153 centers. A good New Year's resolution for our community, and all communities of this area, is to get into the Mississippi Hometown Development Program in 1958. Complete information on how communities can enter, at no cost whatsoever, is available from the Mississippi Economic Council, P.
